Plans for Restoration of Wetlands Unveiled

Share

Ambitious plans to restore the Ballona Wetlands have been unveiled by the environmental group that fought for years to save the county’s largest remaining wetland from destruction.

The plans, presented Wednesday night in Westchester, range from a $10-million program to restore limited tidal action to a $50-million effort that would allow tides to rise and fall freely throughout the 260-acre wetland area between Marina del Rey and Playa del Rey.

The restoration program is part of a landmark agreement reached last fall between Friends of Ballona Wetlands and developer Maguire Thomas Partners, which wants to build the massive multibillion-dollar Playa Vista development on the surrounding land. To settle a longstanding lawsuit, Maguire Thomas agreed to protect the wetlands from development and to honor a prior commitment of $10 million for their restoration.
