An Eagle Rock man fell to his death while attempting to place an American flag on the face of the 50-foot boulder after which this northeast Los Angeles community is named, police said Friday.

The body of Harvey Forsbert, 25, was discovered by his wife about 11:30 a.m. Friday at the base of the Eagle Rock. Los Angeles Police Lt. Dave Waterman said Carmela Forsbert was aware of her husband’s attempt to climb the rock and went to find him when he did not return home.

The large American flag Forsberg was carrying was found in one of the two caves that make up part of the rock’s distinguishing features. Waterman said Forsbert left his home late Thursday night but the time of death is unknown.
