FULLERTON : Council Moves to Annex Golf Course

The city is one step closer to annexing Imperial Golf Course after adopting a resolution that would transfer the facility from Brea to Fullerton.

The Fullerton City Council voted earlier this month to adopt a resolution already approved by Brea officials that would allow Unocal Land Development Corp. to develop 159 acres on the site.

Unocal, which is owned by Union Oil Co. of California, has plans for a single-family development that would encompass 99 acres in Fullerton and the 59-acre golf course.

The Brea City Council voted Jan. 3 for the transfer to Fullerton after deciding that Brea could not provide the city services needed when the project is completed, said Jim Cutts, director of development for Brea.

“It’s difficult for one development to be in two cities,” said Cutts. “When problems arise, residents are confused as to which city they should call.”

Fullerton and Unocal are expected to come up with more detailed development plans and submit them to the Brea City Council for approval, said Paul Dudley, Fullerton’s director of development services.

Dudley predicted that resolutions about the project will be flying back and forth between the two councils for the next three to five years.

Meanwhile, Brea’s council is already insisting that a new golf course must be in place before annexation can occur.

Located at 2200 E. Imperial Highway, Imperial Golf Course opened in 1971.

“We’d like to see the (new) golf course built before any development takes place,” said Cutts.
