NATION IN BRIEF : MASSACHUSETTS : Special Election Set to Replace Rep. Conte

The special election to choose a successor to the late Rep. Silvio O. Conte (R-Mass.) will be held June 4, with the primary on April 30, Gov. William F. Weld announced. Conte, 69, the ranking Republican on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, died Feb. 8 after undergoing surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain. The congressman’s widow, Corinne, is considering running for the state’s vacant 1st District seat.
