SHOPTALK : In Fine Feathers

Share

PLAYBOY MAGAZINE shops there. And the fancy feathers that set aflutter designer-to-the-stars Bob Mackie gowns also come from there. The wholesale distributor, Amcan Feather Co., which has been in business in New York City since 1926, has been selling to the film, commercial, fashion and TV industries in Los Angeles for the past 10 years.

At the shop, hidden away on a second floor overlooking Beverly Boulevard, a single turkey quill will set you back 35 cents, while ostrich boas in dozens of snazzy colors run as high as $150. Amcan also is fast becoming a major supplier to New Orleans, the city of masks, filling orders for flirtatious, artful handmade cover-ups starting at $35 and going up to $150 for a stunner comprising pheasant, coque and hackle.

And, no, birds aren’t killed for their feathers.

Amcan Feather Co., 8338 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles; (213) 653-1508.
