PagerPhone Pacts: Universal Cellular Inc., a start-up company that plans to manufacture a combined pager and cellular phone, said Thursday that it has reached a marketing and manufacturing agreement with Japan Steel Works Ltd., a subsidiary of industrial giant Mitsui & Co. in Tokyo.

Under the deal, Japan Steel will manufacture Universal’s PagerPhone and sell the products in Asia.

Universal also announced a strategic alliance with a German firm, Metzler Corp., in preparation for its entry into the European market. The PagerPhone is scheduled to hit the U.S. market in May, said Cliff Tompkins, chief financial officer.
