Iran’s foreign minister, his German counterpart and Chancellor Helmut Kohl agreed Monday to strengthen political, economic and cultural ties between their two countries.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati, on a three-day visit to Germany, met with Kohl and German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher for talks on the Gulf crisis and on Iranian-German relations.

Velayati and Genscher “agreed that the governments want to expand cooperation in all areas,” a Foreign Ministry statement said.

The two also decided to resume talks on the establishment of cultural exchanges and of a joint economic council headed by the economics ministers of the two countries, the statement said.

The improvement of relations between Iran and Germany, which had been rather distant since the Iranian revolution in 1979, will present a “stabilizing element in international relations,” the statement said.
