Borrego Springs Was U.S. Hot Spot in ’90

Borrego Springs, Calif., had more record hot days last year than any other place in the United States outside Death Valley. And, except for Alaska, Pinedale, Wyo., had the most cold days.

Borrego Springs registered the highest temperatures on 86 days, its second consecutive year atop that list. Pinedale recorded the chilliest readings on 39 days.

Behind Pinedale on the chilly list were Fraser, Colo., and Wisdom, Mont., tied for second with 35 daily lows each. Truckee, Calif., was fourth with 26 lows.

A distant second with 28 daily highs was Ft. Myers, Fla., followed by Presidio, Tex., with 26. Tied at fourth place with 22 highs were Bullhead City, Ariz.; Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; McAllen, Tex., and Yuma, Ariz.

The highest single reading of the year outside Death Valley was 123 degrees, set in Yuma on June 26. Death Valley managed a 125 degree reading July 12.

The coldest single reading outside Alaska was -55 degrees in Meadow Lake, Ida., on Dec. 23. That was also the date that the greatest difference between the extremes--143 degrees--was marked. The high was 88 degrees in Cotulla, Tex.

Alaska recorded a low of -61 degrees at Circle City on Jan. 31.
