Deliberations Start Over as Juror Delivers Son

Share

A 23-year-old juror deliberating the fate of convicted killer Rodney Garmanian went into labor early Tuesday, forcing the panel to begin its deliberations anew with an alternate jury member.

Hours later, while jurors debated whether to send Garmanian to the gas chamber or state prison for life without possibility of parole, Martha Brice gave birth to a son, Jeffrey Alan Brice, at Santa Monica Hospital Medical Center.

Brice and other jurors found the former security guard guilty last month of the 1988 murder and attempted rape of Pacific Palisades teen-ager Teak Dyer. On Friday, they told Santa Monica Superior Court Judge J. L. Weisberg that, after six days, they were split 6 to 6 on what penalty he should receive. The judge ordered them to try to resolve the impasse and avoid a mistrial.
