TUSTIN : Food Drive Planned for Marine Families

Share

Bins to collect food for families of soldiers sent to the Middle East will be appearing around town in the next week. In response to the needs of Marine dependents, Tustin resident Zippora Shifberg-Mencher is starting a program called Breaking Bread.

“It’s not charity,” Shifberg-Mencher said. “It’s friends sharing with friends.”

Great Western Reclamation has agreed to donate bins for the collection of goods and will deliver the food to the Family Service Center at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. Military officials will distribute it food to families.

Though Maj. John Sayre is quick to point out that the Marine families are not destitute, many of them have felt a financial pinch since the soldiers, many of whom held second jobs, were deployed. According to Sayre, 82% of all enlisted Marines stationed at the El Toro and Tustin bases hold second jobs to help make ends meet.

Shifberg-Mencher said she would like to see bins placed at all supermarkets, schools and housing developments in the city and hopes that schools and classes will challenge each other to see who can collect the most goods.
