The United States will emerge from the Gulf War as the world’s sole superpower, burying the “Vietnam syndrome” that burdened it with self-doubt for more than a decade, said TURKISH PRESIDENT TURGUT OZAL. In a television interview, he said President Bush’s decisive response to Iraq’s conquest of Kuwait will leave Bush very strong. The Turkish president said he expects a U.S. military presence, not necessarily ground troops, to remain in the region after the war. Ozal said the emergence of the United States as the sole surviving superpower does not necessarily represent a danger. “If the superpower is managed by a democracy’s rules, there is no danger; I don’t think so,” he said.
