Sumitomo Settles Bias Suit: The Japanese-owned trading company Sumitomo Corp. of America has agreed to hire more non-Japanese managers to settle a discrimination suit. Current and former American employees had alleged that the New York company gave preference in management positions to Japanese nationals from the parent company, Sumitomo Shoji Kaisha Ltd. The settlement includes cash payments of up to $17,000 to the 130 who sued, plus higher wages.
