Council Votes Itself Wide Power Over CRA

The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to give itself sweeping authority over the city’s troubled Community Redevelopment Agency, which is responsible for tax-financed renovation of 7,000 acres in 17 neighborhoods from San Pedro to the San Fernando Valley.

Council members vote 14 to 0 to give themselves authority to overturn CRA decisions and remove members of the agency’s commission. In addition, City Atty. James Hahn and City Controller Rick Tuttle will replace the agency’s private legal counsel and its controller.

The new ordinance, which had won preliminary approval three weeks ago, will also provide a way for citizens to challenge aspects of redevelopment projects by petitioning individual members of the council, city officials said.
