A young girl who confronted a robber in the hallway of her home in Rosemead Tuesday locked herself in a bedroom and called authorities while her 80-year-old grandmother hid on an outside balcony, sheriff’s deputies said.

A SWAT team surrounded the house in the 2500 block of Del Mar Avenue while deputies talked to the 13-year-old girl on the phone, but the robber was not found, Sheriff’s Department spokesman Larry Mead said. Neither the girl nor her grandmother, who deputies found hiding on the balcony outside, was hurt.

The incident began about 9:40 a.m., when the armed robber confronted the girl in a upstairs hallway. The girl turned, ran into a bedroom and called 911. A SWAT team entered the house about 11:40 a.m. and freed the girl and the elderly woman, but did not find the robber.
