In Amman, Jordanian police used night sticks to beat back about 300 pro-Iraqi DEMONSTRATORS trying to reach the U.S. Embassy. The official reaction to Hussein’s speech was subdued: “Jordan has always advocated an Iraqi withdrawal from Kuwait.” KING HUSSEIN summoned ambassadors of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council to appeal for a cease-fire. But many pro-Iraqi PALESTINIANS appeared dismayed. “This is a tragedy. . . . I have been deceived by this man,” said newspaper columnist Mounis Razzaz. “It cannot be true,” another said. “We are sure Saddam’s voice was dubbed and this (radio) station is airing these lies from Saudi Arabia.”
