Sgt. Joseph Thompson is going home soon after risking his life to wrest Kuwait from Iraq’s army.

Thompson’s knee was shattered when a shell, probably fired from a tank, hit his Bradley Fighting Vehicle on Feb. 20. His crew was covering Americans who were searching surrendering Iraqis in the desert north of the Saudi-Iraq border, he said by phone Tuesday from the U.S. Army hospital in Landstuhl.

“We were about (40 miles) north of Hafr al Batin, Saudi Arabia, when it happened,” said Thompson, 31, of Valley View, Tex.

“The impact threw me against the wall of the vehicle. When I came to, I was on the floor.”
