South Korea will apply to join the United Nations this year if North Korea continues to oppose joint admission, the foreign ministry announced Wednesday.

A ministry spokesman said in a statement that North Korea on Tuesday distributed a memorandum to U.N. members saying that Korean entry to the world body must be preceded by a nonaggression pact between the two sides of the divided peninsula.

The two Koreas, foes since their 1950-53 war, made no progress on the contentious issue of U.N. membership in talks last year.
