For Douglas’ Bravery: Actor Kirk Douglas will receive a special award from the Writers Guild of America honoring his efforts to end the McCarthy-era blacklist in 1960. The Robert F. Meltzer Award will be presented to Douglas during the 43rd annual WGA Awards March 20 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Douglas will be cited for his “bravery” in insisting that Dalton Trumbo receive on-screen credit for writing “Spartacus” in 1960. Trumbo was blacklisted as a member of the so-called “Hollywood Ten” when he would not answer the questions of the House Un-American Activities Committee, which was investigating alleged Communist activities. The award has not been given out in 40 years.
