Increase in UC Student Fees

Share

The state of California was outstanding in that it had no tuition for higher education. Higher education was open to the poorest of the poor.

Then Ronald Reagan came along as governor. He introduced tuition for the four-year colleges, but he called it a “fee.” A fee was what one would pay for such things as athletic facilities. Once tuition was accepted under whatever name, there was no restriction on increasing it.

Gov. Deukmejian introduced a “fee” for the community colleges.

And now under Gov. Wilson we have a drastic increase in tuition for the University of California. This will, of course, rule out many potential students.

What do these three governors have in common? Could it be the Republican Party?
