Margaret E. McKinny; Retired Teacher

Margaret E. McKinny, who taught for 16 years at San Fernando Elementary School, has died in a North Hollywood convalescent hospital. She was 86.

A longtime resident of Granada Hills, Mrs. McKinny died Monday of complications of old age, said her son, John McKinny.

Born Margaret Tift in Shelby, Iowa, she came to California in 1944. She began teaching at San Fernando Elementary School in 1954, where she mainly taught first grade. She retired in 1970. Mrs. McKinny was a member of the Woodley Avenue Baptist Church.

She is survived by sons John McKinny of Granada Hills, Ned McKinny of Wawona, Calif., and Ralph Norman McKinny of Lucerne Valley, Calif.; sisters Marjorie Greve of Simi Valley and Dorothie Zimmerman of Shelby, Iowa; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Ralph Charles McKinny, died in 1973.

A funeral is scheduled at 1 p.m. today at Utter-McKinley Mortuary, 11071 Columbus Ave., in Mission Hills, which is handling the arrangements. Burial will follow at Oakwood Memorial Park in Chatsworth. Donations can be made in Mrs. McKinny’s name to the American Cancer Society or the March of Dimes.
