From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The kind of multinational effort that drove Iraq from Kuwait is needed to win the war on drugs, Colombian President Cesar Gaviria told reporters in Coral Gables, Fla., as he concluded a four-day U.S. visit. Gaviria said his country in the first six weeks of this year seized 11.4 tons of cocaine, double the amount seized during that time last year. Despite that success and a reduction in U.S. demand, he said, cocaine processing is increasing in other countries, demand is rising in Europe and Asia and there has been little progress in stopping the laundering of drug money.
