North Carolina gave Coach Dean Smith a victory on his 60th birthday as the No. 4 Tar Heels defeated Georgia Tech, 91-74, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game Thursday night at Atlanta.

Rick Fox scored 18 points for North Carolina, which improved its record to 22-4 overall and 10-3 in the ACC.

Kenny Anderson, a sophomore guard who said he may leave for the NBA, scored 15 points for Georgia Tech (16-10, 6-7), which made only nine of 40 shots in the first half.

No. 5 Indiana 62, Michigan State 56--Calbert Cheaney scored 18 points for the Hoosiers (24-4, 12-3) and led an early second-half surge in a Big Ten Conference game at East Lansing, Mich..

Steve Smith scored 19 points for Michigan State (17-9, 10-6).

No. 7 Arizona 103, Oregon State 65--The Wildcats clinched at least a tie for the Pacific 10 Conference championship with the victory at Corvallis, Ore.

The loss for Oregon State (13-12, 7-8) matched the Beavers’ worst ever at home. They lost by 38 points to UCLA in 1978.

Arizona is 24-5 and 12-3.

No. 11 New Mexico State 67, Pacific 60--In a game delayed at the start for nearly an hour by a bomb scare, Willie Benjamin scored 16 points to lead the Aggies (22-4, 14-3) to the Big West Conference victory at Las Cruces, N.M.

Dell Demps scored 23 points for Pacific (13-13, 9-8).

No. 14 Southern Mississippi 85, Southeastern Louisiana 60--The Golden Eagles scored the game’s first 26 points and cruised to victory at Hattiesburg, Miss.

Clarence Weatherspoon scored 17 points and had 14 rebounds for Southern Mississippi (21-5). Southeastern Louisiana concluded the season 9-19.

Illinois (20-8, 10-5) became the first Big Ten team to have nine consecutive 20-win seasons by beating Michigan, 68-65, at Champaign, Ill. In a Big Ten game at Minneapolis, Minnesota (11-14, 4-11) ended a seven-game losing streak with an 88-70 victory over Northwestern (5-20, 0-15). . . . Jimmy Oliver scored 25 points to lead Purdue (14-11, 6-9) to a 69-62 Big Ten victory over Wisconsin (3-12, 7-8) at West Lafayette, Ind.

Luc Longley scored 26 points to lead New Mexico (19-8, 9-6) to a 66-56 victory over Air Force (8-19, 1-14) in a Western Athletic Conference game at Air Force Academy, Colo. . . . Jamal Faulkner scored 27 points to lead Arizona State (17-8, 8-7) to a 99-84 Pacific 10 Conference victory over Oregon (12-13, 7-8) at Eugene, Ore.
