Great Western Buys Florida Thrift: The Beverly Hills thrift is expanding its operations in Florida by paying $5.25 million for 33 branches of the failed Pioneer Federal Savings Bank in Clearwater. The agreement, made with the federal Resolution Trust Corp., gives Great Western more than $950 million in deposits. Great Western is Florida’s largest thrift and the sixth largest financial institution in the state.
