Mildred G. Wilcox; Retired Teacher

Mildred G. Wilcox, a teacher in the San Fernando Valley for 24 years, has died at an El Toro nursing home. She was 86.

A former Van Nuys resident, Mrs. Wilcox died Tuesday of complications of a stroke, said her daughter, Kathryn Roy.

Born in Ukiah, Calif., she came to Los Angeles as a child and graduated from Van Nuys High School. Mrs. Wilcox taught at O’Melveny Elementary School in San Fernando from 1926 to 1933. She took time off to raise her family and returned to O’Melveny in 1943.

In 1947, she transferred to Camellia Avenue School in North Hollywood, where she worked until her retirement in 1960, according to school officials. Mrs. Wilcox was a longtime member of a PEO Sisterhood chapter in Van Nuys, member of an American Legion auxiliary post in Van Nuys and past president of a postal supervisors auxiliary post.

She is survived by daughters Kathryn Roy of Lake Elizabeth and June Petit of LaFayette, Ind.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held Friday, with burial at Oakwood Memorial Park. Reardon Simi Valley Mortuary handled the arrangements. Donations can be made in Mrs. Wilcox’s name to Cottey Junior College, 1000 W. Austin St., Nevada, Mo. 64772.
