Jamaican Merlene Ottey broke the four-year-old world 200 meters indoor record in a meet at Sindelfingen, Germany, being clocked at 22.24 seconds to take three-hundredths of a second off the previous best by Heike Drechsler of East Germany at Indianapolis in March 1987.
