Cal State Faculty Senate Calls for an End to ROTC

Share

Even as public support for the U.S. military reaches its highest level in years in the afterglow of the Persian Gulf victory, the California State University faculty senate is urging that ROTC programs be ordered off the system’s campuses.

Prompted by protests at Cal State Northridge last year against the Defense Department’s policy barring homosexuals from the military, the system’s Academic Senate has adopted a resolution urging faculty and administrators at the 20 campuses to begin phasing out military training programs immediately.

The resolution is advisory only, leaving the issue to each campus. The senate also asked the system’s board of trustees to pass a resolution at its meeting this month making elimination of ROTC mandatory throughout the system.
