THE WEEK AHEAD : JOHANNESBURG : Winnie Mandela Trial Reopens

The kidnaping and assault trial of Winnie Mandela resumes Wednesday in the South African capital following a three-week postponement called to allow the prosecution time to find a key witness kidnaped on the eve of his testimony.

So far, the government hasn’t been able to locate the witness--one of three survivors of an alleged beating at Mandela’s Soweto home in 1988.

The other two survivors have refused to testify until the missing witness, Gabriel Mekgwe, is found. Judge Michael Stegmann has threatened to throw the pair in jail unless they change their minds.

Prosecutor Jan Swanepoel says he has no case without the testimony.
