Ending a historic gathering of Catholic church leaders from the West and the Middle East, Pope John Paul II called for an “IMMEDIATE SOLUTION” TO THE PALESTINIAN PROBLEM as the foundation for lasting regional peace. “It will be necessary to overcome the grudges and cultural divisions and, particularly, those that have grown up between different religious worlds,” the Pope said. Flanked by black-robed patriarchs of Eastern Rite Catholic churches and prelates of Western nations directly involved in the Gulf War, the Pope said he hopes to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to pray together with Jewish and Muslim leaders in a disputed city sacred to all three religions.
