OXNARD : Grant to Aid Repair of Boxing Center

Share

The city of Oxnard has received a $182,000 federal grant to begin making repairs to a popular youth boxing center, officials said Thursday.

The money was made available through the Urban Park and Recreation Recovery Program, Rep. Robert Lagomarsino (R-Ventura) said.

La Colonia Boxing Center, which attracts about 50 boys a day, has an unstable roof and other building deficiencies that will cost about $325,000 to repair, officials said.

The center at 520 East 1st St. is owned and funded by the city, but it also depends on donations and money raised from monthly boxing exhibitions at the Oxnard Elks Lodge.

Members of a nonprofit corporation that was formed in 1990 to keep the center operating are continuing to lobby Oxnard officials to apply for other grants that might help pay for the rest of the needed repairs.

Besides the unstable roof, the center has wiring and ventilation problems, and does not provide access or restrooms for the handicapped, which is required by law, city building inspectors said.

City officials have set no deadline for completion of the repairs.
