SANTA PAULA : Schools Authorize 4 Potential Layoffs

Share

The Santa Paula Union High School District could lose up to four teachers next year to layoffs because of budget cuts, district officials said Thursday.

Another three teachers will not return because of leaves or expiration of temporary contracts. The district has 57 full-time teachers.

In a meeting behind closed doors Wednesday night, district trustees agreed to send notices of potential layoffs to four unidentified teachers at Santa Paula High School. Another full-time teacher will be notified that his or her hours will be cut.

District officials said reduced state funding forced the board Wednesday night to authorize the layoffs to help trim $500,000 from the 1991-92 budget. Although these are the most teachers the district has ever had to notify of potential layoff, Supt. Carolina L. Erie said the layoffs may be reduced if the budget picture improves.

District officials said any layoffs would not come until at least May, but the law requires that the notices be sent out by March 15.
