GULF IN BRIEF : GERMANY : Minesweepers Being Sent to Gulf Duty

Bonn notified the United States and its Persian Gulf coalition partners that it will send minesweepers to help clear Iraqi mines from Kuwaiti waters, the Pentagon announced. The number of minesweepers was not disclosed. Germany supported the U.N. Security Council resolutions against Iraq’s takeover of Kuwait. But except for some planes it sent to help defend Turkey against possible attack, the Bonn government did not send forces to the Gulf, citing constitutional restrictions.
