Carrier Saratoga Leaves Gulf Region
In a further sign of reduced tension in the Persian Gulf region, the aircraft carrier Saratoga left the volatile waterway and crossed the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea, a canal spokesman said.
The Saratoga, escorted by three U.S. warships, is on its way to its home port of Mayport, Fla.
Separately, four American amphibious assault ships carrying about 2,000 sailors and 6,300 Marines left the Gulf from the southern port of Dubai.
They reportedly were headed for Norfolk, Va., the largest American naval base on the East Coast. The ships are the Raleigh, the Manitowoc, the Trenton and the Iwo Jima.
The amphibious ship Portland, carrying 300 sailors and 325 Marines, left Dubai on Sunday, reportedly for the same destination.
