GTE Wins Final OK on Contel Merger: GTE Corp. said the California Public Utilities Commission approved its merger with Contel Corp., removing the last hurdle for the companies to complete the deal. PUC approval was crucial because of GTE’s large phone operations in California. Sources say formal consummation of the $6.2-billion merger could come as early as today.
