Data General Unveils Fast Computers: The Westboro, Mass., company said the mid-sized Aviion machines are as fast as mainframe computers costing millions of dollars. It said it will marketthe computers, which start at $96,000, to traditional users of mainframes, such as large corporations and government agencies, as well as to users moving up to mainframe power. The machines are “servers” that act as the central data bank for networks of desktop computers. They run a version of the industry-standard Unix operating system.
