Authorities on Thursday were looking for a 78-year-old Granada Hills man, missing since Sunday, whose car was found in a ditch in the Mojave Desert.

Rudy Kavara was reported missing after he failed to meet his son in Bullhead City, Ariz., where he owns a mobile home, authorities said. He had been visiting his sister in Hesperia before leaving for Bullhead City, authorities said.

Kavara’s abandoned car was found Wednesday afternoon by Air Force security officers next to a dirt road near the southern edge of Edwards Air Force Base, at Avenue B-8 and 5th Street West, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Ed Grantham.

Search-and-rescue teams from the Los Angeles and Kern County sheriff’s departments and the Air Force began a limited search Wednesday afternoon but suspended it overnight. They resumed the search early Thursday and were expected to continue it today after breaking for the night, Grantham said.

Los Angeles Sheriff’s Lt. Terry Lewis estimated that up to 30 people were participating in the search.
