Sellars’ New Opera: A packed theater of international critics is expected tonight in Brussels for the world premiere of “The Death of Klinghoffer,” an opera staged by director Peter Sellars. Based on the 1985 terrorist hijacking of the cruise ship Achille Lauro, the new work reunites the same creative team responsible for “Nixon in China”: composer John Adams, librettist Alice Goodman and choreographer Mark Morris. After Brussels, “The Death of Klinghoffer” is to move to Lyon, France, in April before making its U.S. premiere in September at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. One of the hijackers killed Leon Klinghoffer, throwing the elderly man and his wheelchair overboard.
