College Imposes Tight Restrictions on Smoking

Cal State Northridge has banned smoking in most indoor public areas and within 30 feet of buildings outdoors under the first phase of new no smoking rules.

Beginning Monday, smoking is prohibited in hallways, restrooms, dining areas and staff lounges on campus. In six months, smoking will be prohibited in all indoor areas. University President James Cleary, a pipe smoker, pledged to ban smoking at all university events by 1995--even football games at the outdoor stadium.

Cleary approved the new rules last week after more than a year of deliberation by faculty and student organizations, citing evidence that secondhand smoke can cause serious health problems for nonsmokers. The rules follow the lead of institutions such as UC Berkeley and Cal State campuses at Long Beach and Fullerton.
