Bill on Stricter Car Fuel Economy Advances: Federal legislation requiring auto makers to sharply increase the fuel economy of new cars was approved 14-5 by the Senate Commerce Committee. The measure, strongly opposed by the auto industry, requires that the average fuel economy be increased 20% to 34.5 miles per gallon during the next five years and by 40% to 40 m.p.g. by 2001. Currently, cars must average 27.5 m.p.g.
