County Supervisors Refuse to Rule Out Hospital Site

Share

County supervisors refused Tuesday to eliminate Irwindale as a possible site for a county hospital in the San Gabriel Valley, despite a new report recommending a site in unincorporated Bassett.

Supervisor Gloria Molina fought to keep the 38-acre, $42-million Irwindale site in the running for at least a week until meeting with owners and looking over other potential locations.

“We would be making a big mistake by stating at this time that (the Irwindale) site is not acceptable,” Molina said, adding that the recommended Bassett site, near Valley Boulevard and the 605 Freeway, would require demolition of 69 homes. The board is hoping to replace the aging County-USC Medical Center in East Los Angeles with two state-of-the-art hospitals, one at the Medical Center site and the other in the San Gabriel Valley.
