THE DOCTOR IS NOT IN: Being a Mayo at the Mayo Clinic had its unwelcome side effects. Dr. Joseph Mayo of Yorba Linda says when he and his brother, Chester, of the Minnesota Mayos (E1), did their postgraduate work in Rochester, Minn., in the mid-1980s they got all the letters addressed to “Dr. Mayo.” . . . The letters didn’t contain checks or “attaboys,” either. Most were complaints, pleas for advice or requests for quick appointments.
