Residents may eventually pay more for trash pickup--but not for at least three months.
The City Council approved a request by Western Disposal Co. to increase its rate by $1.30 per month to cover costs from the closure of the Azusa landfill last month. Residents now pay $7.97 a month for trash collection.
The council voted 3 to 2 to subsidize the additional amount until members see new cost of living figures in April, do further studies on trash rates in surrounding cities and study their own revenues during budget sessions in June.
Once a new budget is approved by July 1, the additional cost could be passed on to the residents, said Finance Director Geoff Craig. The three-month subsidy will cost $48,750, he said. Councilmen John R. Dangleis and Anthony Naranjo, who voted against the subsidy, said the city can't afford it.
