Challenge Bowl Pits High School Scholars in Quiz

Share

The fourth annual Academic Challenge Bowl began this month, pitting the five high school teams in the Long Beach Unified School District and St. Anthony against one another in a quiz show format.

Teams from two high schools pair off each Thursday night in a double elimination format. Three contestants represent each school, while other members of that school’s team may be used as substitutes at halftime. Topics include geography, science, math, literature, history and current events. Comic Dan Reddington is emcee.

St. Anthony won the first two years. Millikan will be defending its title from last year.

The 10-week show, produced by the Long Beach City College media services, is taped every Thursday night and aired at 8 p.m. on Channel 32 in Long Beach and Channel 44 in Lakewood. The Academic Challenge Bowl has won awards of excellence in cable television in the past three years from both Long Beach and Lakewood.
