Cudahy : Ground Will Be Broken for Bill Greene Sports Complex

Share

A groundbreaking ceremony for Cudahy’s planned sports complex at Clara Street Park will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

The Bill Greene Sports Complex, named after the state senator who helped city officials win a $250,000 grant for the project, will cost $1.1 million and is expected to be completed by late spring 1992. The complex will include a gymnasium, men’s and women’s locker area and the addition of a multipurpose room to the Leo P. Turner Senior Citizen Center. The gym will be connected to the senior center by a hallway.

The sports complex will be built with state and federal funds that originally were to be used for a swimming pool. City officials late last year abandoned the pool project because the city could not meet a June, 1991, deadline to begin construction, and operation of a pool was estimated to be too costly.

Rep. Matthew G. Martinez (D-Monterey Park) and Sen. Greene (D-Los Angeles) will attend the ceremony. The park is at 4835 Clara St.
