Downey : School Boundaries Revised to Ease Crowded Campuses

In an attempt to relieve overcrowded conditions, the Downey Unified School District Board of Education on Tuesday approved new attendance boundaries for the 1991-92 academic year. About 500 students who currently attend seven elementary schools will be affected.

The new boundaries will move students who attend Imperial, Rio Hondo, Gauldin, Gallatin and Carpenter schools. They will be reassigned to Lewis, Price and Rio San Gabriel schools.

Students who will enter the fifth grade in September will be allowed to graduate from their current schools, Asst. Supt. Donna Boose said.

The Board of Education decided last October to reopen Lewis Elementary School because of overcrowding.

The elementary classes at the school were closed in June, 1977, as enrollment declined in the district. The district held adult school classes at Lewis. A private day-care center also leased a portion of the school.
