Long Beach : Symphony Director Seeks Job With Virginia Group

JoAnn Falletta, the musical director of the Long Beach Symphony, has applied for the directorship of the Virginia Symphony in Norfolk, Va. Should she be chosen for that post, Falletta said, she plans to “restructure” her schedule so as not to decrease her time in Long Beach.

“If anything, I see my time in Long Beach growing,” said Falletta, who recently signed a new three-year contract with the symphony.

Falletta said she would not know for several months whether she will be hired as director of the 85-member Virginia orchestra. Besides being director of the Long Beach Symphony since 1989, Falletta directs the Women’s Philharmonic based in San Francisco and the Denver Chamber Orchestra.
