The tail cone of a Northwest Airlines DC-10 jet fell off shortly after takeoff Wednesday when a bird was drawn into the engine, a spokesman for the carrier said. He said the tail cone, which streamlines air flow at the back of the engine, is designed to break away when something is ingested by the engine. The flight landed safely at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
