MOORPARK : City to Seek High Street Post Office

Share

Moorpark city leaders will ask federal officials for permission to move the post office back downtown as a means of boosting business on High Street.

When the post office moved from the historic street to a shopping center on Los Angeles Avenue in 1984, pedestrian traffic in the downtown area declined, said Susan Cualdwell, assistant to the city manager.

If it were moved back downtown, an increase in traffic might encourage people to shop for other services there, she said in a report to the City Council on Wednesday night.

“It has the potential for being a really unique, historic shopping area,” Carol Hunt, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, said of High Street. “Historically, a post office in a small town . . . can be counted on for generating a lot of traffic.”

“Sooner or later everybody has to go to the post office,” she said.

Because the postal service is a federal agency, the city will seek help from Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley) to get the office moved.

Gallegly could not be reached for comment Thursday.
