The Ocean View School District board this week elected five parents to serve on the district’s education foundation, a private nonprofit corporation that will independently raise money to create and support school programs.

The directors elected were Randall J. Clifford, a trucking executive; Vida Martin, a homemaker; Scott D. Miller, an attorney; Dennis R. Sugino, an investment manager, and Randy Vanderhook, a developmental laboratory technician. All five members previously have served on district advisory committees or other community service boards.

The elected directors will be joined on the seven-member panel by Supt. Monte McMurray and James Jones, the district’s assistant superintendent for business.

The district has spent nearly a year organizing the formation of the Ocean View Educational Foundation. Such organizations in recent years have become increasingly popular among school districts as a means of augmenting dwindling public funding.

In addition to raising money, the foundation will recommend to the Board of Trustees which programs should be supported by the funding.

The education foundation will hold its organizational meeting later this month and is expected to develop its agenda by the end of this school year, McMurray said.
