NHL ROUNDUP : Nordiques’ Tugnutt Stops 70 Shots by Bruins

Ron Tugnutt made 70 saves for the Quebec Nordiques in a 3-3 tie against the Boston Bruins Thursday night at Boston.

The Bruins’ 73 shots were 10 shy of the NHL record of 83, set by Boston in a 3-2 victory over Chicago on March 4, 1941.

Boston’s Cam Neely suggested Tugnutt take a bow in front of the Boston fans, and Turgnutt complied.

“I’ve never been in a situation before where an opposing player told me to take a bow in his own building,” Tugnutt said.

Pittsburgh 5, N.Y. Rangers 4--John Vanbiesbrouck’s inability to glove a bouncing puck cost the Rangers a chance to reclaim first place in the Patrick Division and put the Penguins in the playoffs for the second time in nine years.

Kevin Stevens fired a shot off the boards and Vanbiesbrouck knocked it into the net as he tried to glove it 13 seconds into overtime, enabling the Penguins to win at Pittsburgh.

Chicago 2, New Jersey 2--John McLean scored with 28 seconds left at Chicago to earn the Devils the tie. With New Jersey goaltender Sean Burke pulled for an extra skater, McLean beat goalie Ed Belfour from six feet.

St. Louis 4, Philadelphia 1--Dave Lowry had two goals and an assist as the Blues scored three first-period goals and dumped the reeling Flyers at Philadelphia. The Flyers have has lost seven of its last eight games and has one victory in its past 10.

Washington 6, N.Y. Islanders 2--Al Iafrate triggered a four-goal burst in 4:28 of the second period as the Capitals won at Uniondale, N.Y., to complete a seven-game sweep of their season series with the Islanders.
