Dan Rather at War
Concerning “TV and the Gulf War; Who Won, Who Lost in Media Coverage of Conflict,” A Section, March 1): I do not understand how Howard Rosenberg could call Dan Rather a loser because his voice cracked and he shed a few tears when reporting on our troops entering the ground war. Many of us did the same.
I recall the late Clete Roberts reporting on President Kennedy’s assassination with a cracked voice and tears; also, when Jess Marlow reported the accident that killed Gary Powers (the onetime U-2 pilot), his voice cracked.
It’s nice to know that these outstanding newsmen, who have to report tragedy after tragedy, have not become so calloused as to not care about sad incidents.
